Dizzee Rascal
Four years ago when East London’s Dizzee Rascal made his Texas debut at SXSW, no one ever expected that this complex rapper with his heavy cockney accent and brash delivery would end up working with some of the south’s most respected artists. Fast forward to 2008 and Dizzee has appeared on stage and on record with artists such as UGK, Chamillionaire and The Grit Boys. His third release, the critically acclaimed Maths and English will be released in the U.S. by the avant-garde hip-hop label, Def Jux.

To celebrate this monumental release, Dizzee will perform alongside his new label CEO El-P and classic West Coast rapper, Del the Funkee Homosapien. In hopes of bringing even more of his London sound to the forefront in America, he’s also bringing along Jammer and The Newham Generals, lauded by UK critics as the next voices to emerge from London’s rapidly developing grime music scene.

In addition to the UK, SXSW is very pleased to announce that this year hip-hop music will be represented from all corners of the globe. South Africa’s Tumi has been an outspoken voice in his country for many years. He uses hip-hop to speak out against injustice and to rock parties. Marcelo D-2 is also an old schooler of sorts. Hailing from Brazil, he and his group, Planet Hemp did a lot to bring the sound and culture of hip-hop to South America. Lars Vaular, representing Bergen, Norway, may not look like the typical rapper, being a white guy from one of the most beautiful cities in Norway, but his full length debut La Hat landed on many European end of 2007 Top Ten lists. Montreal’s Giselle Numba 1 is emerging as one of Canada’s most outspoken female voices. And of course Barcelona’s revolutionary new pop star Mala Rodriguez will be with us as well.

And that’s not all. Look forward to a wealth of new hip-hop talent from around the world at SXSW ’08.
