Sony, whose presence at SXSW 2008 ran the gamut from buzz bands MGMT and The Ting Tings to supporting the SXSW Film festival, recently purchased Gracenote, the company that tracks album information for music services like iTunes. Gracenote is also is integrating its technology into mobile phones, home audio gear, and DVDs.
“Gracenote is a global leader in technology and services for digital media identification, enrichment, and recommendation, and these capabilities will be essential to the next wave of innovation in content, services, and consumer electronics,” said Tim Schaaff, SCA Senior Vice President, Software.
As a fitting Texas tribute, Sony Legacy released the Willie Nelson boxed set in time for SXSW 2008 and Willie’s 75th birthday. The company’s broad base of international artists at SXSW included Allison (Mexico), Circo (Puerto Rico), Australia’s Old Man River and Ireland’s Paddy Casey.
Sony and Gracenote anticipate that the transaction will close in late May, subject to regulatory approvals.
