There's a new service on the block and it might just take off if the RIAA doesn't shut it down. It brings engagement to a new level.
Turntable.fm is a new service that allows multiple people to DJ for a room. The people in the room vote on the current song. If a song gets too many negative votes the next song is played. DJs can earn points by playing songs that others like. This brings engagement to a new level in music where one can join any number of rooms that have varying styles of music from smooth jazz to metal.
This could be a great new way to get turned onto music that you haven't heard before that is if the RIAA doesn't decide that the site needs to shut down or hand over tons of cash. Regardless of how the RIAA feels, Turntable.fm has definitely raised the bar as far as recommendation and engagement are concerned.
Anyone can be a DJ so if you are an independent band you could slip a song in to gauge the audience. I'd suggest doing it in the proper room and don't go overboard pushing your own songs.
