The American Society of Composers,
Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) will
present its Golden Note Award to
best-selling solo recording artist and
songwriter Garth Brooks on Tuesday
evening, September 11, 2001 at a
reception and dinner to be held on
Capitol Hill, it was announced today by
ASCAP President & Chairman Marilyn Bergman. The invitation-only event, to be hosted by Marilyn Bergman and attended by
members of Congress, will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Dirksen Senate Office
Building, Room 106, in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes Mr. Brooks'
outstanding contributions to American music as a performer and songwriter.

The evening will be highlighted by a musical tribute to Brooks featuring friends
and admirers from the songwriting and performing world, including: Pat Alger
("The Thunder Rolls," "Unanswered Prayers"), Alan Bergman ("The Way We Were,"
"The Windmills of Your Mind"), John Bettis ("Slow Hand," "Yesterday Once More"),
Hal David ("Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," "Alfie"), Dean Kay ("That's
Life"), Jimmy Webb ("By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "MacArthur Park), and Paul
Williams ("We've Only Just Begun," "Evergreen").

"Garth Brooks is a genuine superstar who has established a personal connection
with millions of fans around the world," said Marilyn Bergman. "As one of the
most successful artists in recording history, he has had a profound impact on
our industry and on our nation's culture. A gifted songwriter, a dynamic concert
performer and a major musical force, Garth Brooks is truly deserving of the
ASCAP Golden Note Award."

Oklahoma-born Garth Brooks made his recording debut in 1989. Since then, he has
achieved one milestone after another - including over 100 million albums sold,
best-attended concert ever held in New York's Central Park, most successful tour
by a country artist, Artist of the Decade accolades, and more. His enduring
recordings include "The Dance," "We Shall Be Free," "If Tomorrow Never Comes," "
Friends in Low Places," and "The Thunder Rolls. "

The ASCAP Golden Note Award is one of the most prestigious honors that the
Society bestows on its members. Past recipients have included Elton John, Tom
Petty, Stevie Wonder and Andre Previn.

Established in 1914, ASCAP is the world's largest performing rights organization
with over 120,000 composer, lyricist and music publisher members. It is also the
only performing rights organization in the United States whose Board of
Directors is made up solely of writers and publishers, elected by the membership.
