| Since Their inception in 1996, Understorey has adhered to their standard that good songs are exactly what people want to hear. With a sound influenced by many, but that remains all it's own, Understorey have a reputation for intense live shows, and searing guitar work, that has moved their hometown of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. In 1997, Understorey released their first independent cd entitled "My Life Like This", which sold very well in Ottawa's major music consumer stores, and which received heavy airplay on Ottawa's 106.9 FM "The Bear" and on CHEZ 106.1 FM. They charted their first two singles from the album "Alien Hand" and Outcry" on both university radio stations (CKCU, Carleton University and CHUO, Ottawa University), as well as college radio (CKDJ, Algonquin College). In September of 1997, Understorey completed a last minute entry in a local live performance contest within the Ottawa area, set up by R.O.R. Concerts in Toronto. Beating out nineteen other bands, Understorey took home first prize, and a two thousand dollar credit at Raven Street Studios, where This Minor Tremble recorded their first album. Using the time to record a new single "Backstairs" (a song about the backstairs at the famed Barrymore's Music Hall), they were immediately included on 1998's North by Northeast music Festival compilation set up by the Healy Group, (Indie Buzz 1998). With an interesting history behind them, which included a packed cd release party at Barrymore's Music Hall, sharing the stage with such luminaries as Ottawa's own Hennessy, Frog, Boy Wonder, Trevor Finlay, Michaela Foster Marsh, Garrity. Lilith Fair alumni Tammy Raybold, and Juno Award winners MadE, the guys are looking to the future. Understorey have just finished a new demo. Two new songs "Porn Star" and "Glass Eye", as well as their NXNE contribution "Backstairs". All three songs were produced by Understorey and recorded and mixed by Jay Ruston (co-engineer with Mark S. Berry on Puchbuggy's "my Norwegian Cousin" and esteemed producer of others like Ursar Major, Boy Wonder, and Garrity at Distortion Studios (Alanis Morissette, Artificial Joy Club and Puchbuggy), and Jason Jaknunas at Raven Street Studios (This Minor Tremble, Everender) in Ottawa, Canada. |
