Sometimes gigs don't always go well. Here's some ideas to help.

1. Show up early. This gives you time to scope the place out, find problems that are best handled now rather than later (I forgot my cables, tuner etc...) and gives you a chance to settle in and get comfortable.

2. Meet the sound man. It's always a good idea to at least meet and talk with the soundman before the gig so you know where he's coming from and you know what the sound situation is. Discuss soundcheck(if you get one)and set times and loading and unloading. Find out any rules he might have regarding the equipment too.

3.Promote your gig. Nothing makes a gig suck more than playing to the bartender and the sound man. Don't expect the club to draw people in. The club should help by placing ads announcing the show. Promotion is a team effort by the club and the band.

4. Relax. Being stressed out about something can really hurt your performance unless of course you play really agressive music.
