Probably you have heard of mastering. If you haven't the process involves taking the mixed tracks that you just worked so hard on, and giving them the final tweak to raise the overall level of your recording as well as any final adjustments such as eq and compression.
Yes it costs money but, it's worth it. On a 12 song cd it could run you around $400. Do it and you'll be gald you did. You'll be making your recording sound much more like major label cds that listeners are used to. Mastering can make a night and day difference, especially in the overall volume of your tape or cd. Most listeners do consider loud to be definitely better.
The volume is raised through a process called normalizing which takes the levels of your music and moves them as close to 0 as they possibly can be without distorting. So have that new demo or cd mastered and have someone with trained ears and equipment familiarity to do it.
