2007 was another banner year for talent at the South by Southwest Music Conference and Festival. Some of today’s hot acts as well as fantastic classics were on hand for some very unique music experiences.

Pete Townshend

This year’s keynote interview. The man still has the energy to rock. Pete made several appearances around Austin. I caught him at the Austin music awards when he jumped on stage for a few songs with Ian McLagan. The SRO crowd was treated to a great time and performance. If you missed Pete in Austin then you just weren’t trying.

Nellie McKay

Just her and a piano did a quick set at Exodus Friday night. Her classic humor was present along with her fantastic voice. She played some standards as well as songs from her two studio albums. It is as if the woman has one foot in the 30’s and one in the present.

Rocco DeLuca

Rocco played 2 shows that I know of at SXSW. One was at the Parish and the other was at the new DirecTV Live stage in the Austin Convention Center. The 2nd show at the center was broadcast live to DirecTV customers. Rocco channeled spirits during his powerful set. If this was the full band I don’t think there would’ve been a building standing when it was over. If you haven’t heard Rocco, check him out.

Jim Bianco

Blending his brand of folk, pop and humor Jim Bianco rocked and jazzed up the stage.

His lyrics are fun, interesting and entertaining. He engaged the crowd well and had them all clapping and laughing

The Presidents of the USA

You may not have heard from these guys in a while, but let me tell you they kick ass live. There wasn’t a face that wasn’t smiling at the upper level of Maggie Mae’s. The band crowd surfed and also had fans join them on stage to sing a song. They rocked the house and everyone had a great time.

Lily Allen

A powerful and poppy performance for a capacity crowd at Stubb’s. Evidently, she was still pissed at NME and told everyone so. The stage was full with back-up singers and horns. Lily was there to party as well carrying around a beer and a cigarette. She said that it was time to party since she hit the stage at 11pm.

Meiko

Meiko has a smooth and poetic voice which enamored me as well as many others. Most of her songs are about relationships, which you can tell she covers the subject nicely.

Buzzcocks

The Buzzcocks banged out a great show at the Snocap party. There was a very enthusiastic crowd on hand to hear the guys keep the buzz going. The band played a few shows around town during SXSW week.
