The 2006 CMJ Music Marathon took place October 31-November 4 in New York. Find out about the panels, showcases and tradeshow.
CMJ takes place in New York which lends itself to the enormity and scope of this yearly event. The diversity of the Marathon matches the diversity of the city. There is something for everyone. Let’s start with the panels. I was quite impressed with the scope and number of panels at this conference. If you cannot find something here, it is time to think about doing something else. Seriously. Panels abound for bands trying to navigate the music business: Indie Touring 101, Merchandise Mania, The Ins and Outs of Music Publishing and more. The panels don’t stop there. There are continuing legal education classes, as well as panels for those who want to be in the music business but not as a performer or band. I heard from DJs and Remixers on career paths, a Producer’s Panel, Making Music work with and making Reality TV, perspectives from Concert Promoters and more. There is simply too much to list. This collection of panels was the most wide ranging I have seen. Whatever your bag, genre, mindset, career idea…CMJ has it covered. New York is a great city AND a big city. It can be difficult to navigate if you do not know where you are going. It would be difficult if you were me. I have been to New York before, but I was there with a friend that knew where we were going. Once I was able to find the right train going the right direction I was ok and ready to rock. CMJ included a great map of the subway system in the guide, I just wished there was a map of the clubs that coincided with that map. I caught some great bands at CMJ. Most notably I was impressed by the band Suicide City that really rocked a Brooklyn club called Trash. Energy, passion, melody and crunch made a great combination. Fatal Flying Guillotines were a unique and possessed band that played an intense set of punk rock. Other bands featured at CMJ were: The Decemberists, Ben Lee, Rooney, The Knife, The Cardigans, The Black Keys, The Slits, Steve Earle, The Shins, Tapes n’ Tapes, Archie Bronson Outfit, Medeski, Martin, and Wood, The Fall, Chris Conley, Pinkertones, Swearing at Motorists, andThe Walkmen. CMJ isn’t just music, it is film too! Borat showed up to show off his film “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan”. Tenacious D offered up a new film called “The Pick of Destiny” and the world debut of “Lord Don’t Slow Me Down”, a film about being on tour with Oasis. Other films at CMJ included: Freedom Writers, The Fountain, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer and Stranger than Fiction. CMJ is an action packed career development and marketing tool for anyone that has anything to do with the music business. Mark your calendar and prepare yourself to get to and make the most of CMJ 2007. http://www.cmj.com Check out the CMJ Photo Gallery.
