  • LOST AND FOUND

    April 30, 2008 - no Comments

Lost: Def Leppard’s dignity (but I still love them and consider Hysteria: The Def Leppard Story the best band biopic EVER!).

Found: Roger Waters’ pig. In tatters. In a driveway. In La Quinta. Video here.

  • COACHELLA – AND THE DESERT BECOMES DESERTED (CRAP CEL PHONE YOUTUBE EDITION)

    April 28, 2008 - no Comments

Okay, we all knew the cel phone video of Prince doing “Creep” would show up on YouTube at some point so here it is (courtesy of Brooklyn Vegan).

Tom said the MMJ set went okay, but someone told him that his ass looked huge on the giant monitors. How I wish I’d been there to see that. And David Hasselhoff (and his black eye). Tom gets to have all the fun!

I’ve been to Coachella once and it was grand (Underworld! The Chemical Brothers!). However, I confess that I was not entirely sober. Now that I no longer imbibe, I have to say that standing in 103 degree heat in the desert sounds rather like hell on earth.

That said, I got super wistful when I started reading about…

    The National

    and The Verve

Also, Tom told me that Portishead was amazing.

I hope you had a smashing time out there in Indio (if you went) and if not, now we can pretend we were there.

I actually will be sweating it out at Bonnaroo so I’ll have first hand accounts of how I can’t stand the heat (but stole Kirk Hammett’s fork. Again!)

Email your tales of Coachella to musicblog@sxsw.com. Subscribe to the feed that is RSS’ed here and read more tales of me not being there (but having an opinion about it, anyway).

It’s really early on Monday morning. Why am I awake?! lp

  • Is Racism Making Us Sick?

    April 22, 2008 - no Comments

"I think the everyday experience of racism ... puts one's body on alert, which means it triggers the stress response. Your heart beats faster, your blood pressure rises, blood sugar rises"

When I think about racism, I think about emotional pain, ignorance, the need for equality. via Poynter

  • SXSW AGGRAVATOR – SXSW MUSIC FESTIVAL

    April 22, 2008 - no Comments

ConstantinesSo without Linda here cracking the whip, I've discovered that I'm a blogging slacker. I'm really sorry. I just don't know how to function without her.

I've searched the intrawebs for today's edition of SXSW AGGRAVATOR because I still love you, darling readers. I love you without anyone reminding me that I love you. And who doesn't need a little love from time to time? You're lying to yourself. You need love.

We're covering the festival as a whole this week because it's a big event and can be a little overwhelming...even for me. So here's your bird's-eye review of the SXSW 2008 Music Festival:

The staff at SPIN Magazine listed best and worst SXSW 2008 experiences.

Pitchfork's Paul Thompson covers a few Saturday night showcases including Ice Cube, Constantines and more.

Jon Pareles of the New York Times writes about the growth of the SXSW Music Festival and it's successes despite uncertainty in the music business. You can read it here. I'm too depressed about Jose Gonzalez not coming to Texas (again) to stay focused or keep writing. You kids take care of yourselves and come visit again soon.

I guess you don't have to visit. We could visit you. Just subscribe to our feed.

    Loving Jose from afar,

    Melissa
